I began teaching young women to play volleyball when I was a junior in college in 1996, and I must say -- I've been hooked on coaching ever since! Fast forward to 2023, I've now been coaching girls ages 10-18 for nearly 30 years. During this time, I have coached club for 16 seasons, run summer camp for the last 8 years, offerred more than 50 skills clinics, and individually trained nearly a hundred volleyball players in FL, WV, and NC.
As a fierce competitor, I understand the the joy, exhaustion, heartbreak, and exhilaration that comes with being a competitive athlete. I coach because believe in the power of sport for personal and physical development. I love seeing young women meet and overcome inherent challenges as they tap into the power of teamwork, build self- confidence, and realize their innate potential to succeed, both on and off the court. I see volleyball as a powerful vehicle for young women to learn the value of hard work and persistence as they discover their brightest, most powerful selves.
My Time as a Player
Ever since I can remember, my life has always revolved around athletics. A three sport athlete, I played volleyball, basketball, and ran track throughout middle and high school, and received 1st Team All-Conference and All-State honors in basketball as a junior and senior and 1st team All-Conference Honors in volleyball as a Senior. I served as co-captain in both sports during my junior and senior years and was named the Pomona High School Female Athlete of the Year as a senior.
After high school, I received a scholarship to play basketball at Casper College in Casper, WY and opted to walk on the volleyball team in order to play both sports. Despite being a better basketball player in high school, volleyball was undoubtedly the sport I loved the most. My sophomore year, our basketball team won the region and traveled to Tyler, TX to play in the National Tournament. After my sophomore year, I transferred to Florida Tech in Melbourne, FL, where I received a full ride volleyball scholarship. I captained the volleyball team for the next 2 years, playing 6 rotations as a middle blocker in the front row and left back defender. During my time there, I broke school records for Service Aces, Solo Blocks, Kills and Kill percentage. My senior year, I was selected to the AVCA Division II All-Region Team and finished my senior year ranked 16th in the nation for kills amongst U.S. Division II schools.
Because of the loss of academic credits during my transfer from Casper College, I stayed at Florida Tech for a 3rd year to finish up my dual bachelor degrees. During that time, I served as a 3rd Asst coach for the Volleyball program and walked on the basketball team to compete in my final collegiate season.
My Coaching Story
My coaching journey began during my junior year at Florida Tech. Our college coach was also the Director of the local volleyball club, and I had the opportunity to coach a 14U team. I absolutely loved working with those girls, and quickly realized I had found something far greater than a part time college job. I continued to coach for Harbour City Juniors (now Cape Cosast Volleyball Club) from 1995-1999, primarily working with 14U -16U teams. During this time, I also coached JV and assisted with Varsity teams at Palm Bay High School and Satellite High School in the Melbourne/Satellite Beach area.
In 2000, I moved to WV to begin working at the National Conservation Training Center with The Conservation Fund. After getting settled in, I began coaching again with Musselman High School (Inwood, WV) as an assistant and coached an 11U team in the recreational volleyball program they were running. The following year, the Musselman HS Head Coach and I worked together to build a board of directors and initiate the formation of a local club, the Eastern Panhandle Volleyball Club (EPVBC). I coached 17U and 12U teams with EPVBC for the next 3 years
In 2006, I moved to Asheville, NC to continue my primary profession as a regional conservation planner. My husband and I were blessed with the birth of twin boys in 2010, and when they turned 3, found my way back to coaching volleyball. I joined the coaching staff at Biltmore Volleyball Academy as an Elite coach in 2013, and began coaching at Carolina Day School in 2014, where I remained through the spring of 2024.
